2 Killed in Tokyo’s Jiyugaoka District by Blaze that Spread to 5 Buildings

A fire burned through several residential buildings in the Jiyugaoka district in Tokyo through the early hours of Friday, killing two people. The deceased are believed to be residents with whom no one has been able to establish contact, and police are working to confirm their identities.

According to local fire officials, at around 12:35 a.m. on Friday, a male resident of a two-story house in the district reported that a fire had broken out and that someone was trapped inside. The fire burned a total of approximately 220 square meters across five buildings, including three adjacent houses and one apartment building, and was extinguished about five hours later.

A man in his 70s was recovered from the house where the fire started, and a woman in her 80s was taken from a neighboring two-story house, but both were confirmed dead at the site, police said.
