Strong Earthquake Hits South Pacific Near Tonga

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck areas near the Tonga islands in the South Pacific Ocean at about 1:38 p.m., according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

No tsunami was predicted, according to the agency.

The depth of the earthquake’s focus is estimated to be about 240 kilometers, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.
