Keio University X Dignity Center, which studies human dignity in the age of AI, announced Friday that it will establish a new organization around this autumn to help build “a healthy and dynamic” information space.

The group will bring together universities, media organizations, platform operators and social media creators to engage in dialogue and joint research across industries and generations. The announcement was made at a symposium held the same day at the university’s Mita campus in Tokyo.

The organization will consider a range of initiatives, such as: hosting roundtable discussions where journalists, students and creators can debate the future of media; building a system in which media outlets and platform operators that deliver reliable news are properly recognized and valued; and conducting industry-academia research and surveys aimed at analyzing risks on social media and improving those platforms.

“Anticipating the further spread of AI, we aim to work with a wide range of players to build a healthy and dynamic information space that can preserve human dignity and democracy,” said Eijiro Mizutani, an associate professor at Keio University.

At the symposium, representatives from news organizations, platform operators, young creators and students offered comments on the organization. The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings President Toshikazu Yamaguchi said: “We are living in an era in which anyone can share information, so everyone must work together. [The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings] would like to take an active part in these efforts.”
