Man Dies after Getting Caught in Escalator at Japan’s Mito Station, Ibaraki Prefecture

MITO — A 72-year-old man was found lying near an escalator at JR Mito Station in Ibaraki Prefecture at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The man from Hitachi of the same prefecture lost consciousness shortly after and died about 4 hours later at the hospital where he was taken.
According to local police, the man was found lying face-down at the exit of an escalator connected between the station’s platform and concourse. The back of the jacket he was wearing was caught in the lower part of the escalator’s handrail.
The police are investigating the details and cause of the accident.
