NARA — An official of the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation plays a melody from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral” on a horn in Nara Park. The performance is a seasonal event to attract the park’s famous roaming deer. Shikayose, or deer calling, started in 1892 when a deer protection facility opened within the park. The organizers began holding the event during the summer of 2013. This year, it will be held on Saturdays and Sundays until Aug. 28, except Aug. 14. “You can see many fawns in summer, with the characteristic white spots on their backs clearly visible,” said the foundation’s Shinichiro Nakagawa, 26, who played the horn.
