Genjibotaru fireflies flicker and flutter at a waterway near Gyokusenji Park in Kanoya, Kagoshima Prefecture. According to local residents, the light-emitting insects have emerged about a week earlier than in typical years. The fireflies, which also are in greater numbers than last season, are expected to light up the Kanoya nights through the end of the month.
