HIROSHIMA — A man traveling on an intercity bus was arrested by police over possession of a knife in Hiroshima on Monday morning.
The driver of the bus traveling from Tokyo to Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, made an emergency call, reporting “a man with a knife is in the forward area of the bus,” at a bus stop in Asaminami Ward, Hiroshima, at around 5:25 a.m.
Hiroshima prefectural police rushed to the scene and tried to persuade the man to drop the knife. When he refused, the officers stormed onto the bus and arrested the man on suspicion of violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law at around 5:50 a.m.
According to the prefectural police department, the male passenger is 61-years-old, unemployed and from Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The man is suspected of carrying a folding knife with a blade length of approximately 8 centimeters. He has admitted to the charge. None of the about 20 people on board were injured, and the bus subsequently departed for its destination.
