CDPJ leadership mulls responsibility for election defeat

Members of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan have blamed the party’s leadership for the party’s humiliating setback in Sunday’s House of Representatives election.

“Losing that number of seats is unacceptable. There is no legitimacy for Edano and Fukuyama to remain in their posts,” a veteran party member said.

CDPJ Secretary General Tetsuro Fukuyama told reporters Monday after a meeting with party leader Yukio Edano “the leadership is responsible for the election result.”

“I’m prepared for the worst,” he said, adding that the party would hold a leadership meeting Tuesday to discuss its future course of action.
