A sightseeing boat where passengers can bring their bicycles aboard to enjoy a cruise in Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture

OTSU — Sightseeing boats that allow passengers to bring their bicycles on board began operating in April with the aim of letting visitors enjoy “Biwaichi” — a bicycle tour around Lake Biwa — along with a boat trip.
Biwaichi is a designated national cycling route and has become a popular tourist attraction in Shiga Prefecture, with approximately 119,000 participants at experiences and other events in 2024.
However, since the route involves cycling approximately 200 kilometers, it can feel like a high hurdle for many, including beginners, women and children who may lack physical stamina. Consequently, Shiga Prefecture has proposed alternatives such as a shorter, approximately 50-kilometer course around the southern part of the lake and the use of electric bicycles.
Shiga Prefecture collaborated with Mokube Shipyard Co. in Otsu to allow bicycles aboard sightseeing boats operated by the shipyard from April. The sightseeing boats cruise between Ogoto Harbor, Kusatsu Karasuma Harbor and Nionohama Harbor.
The boats operate only on weekends and holidays. No reservations are required, and no additional fees are charged except for the standard boarding fare.
