TAKETOYO, Aichi — The Taketoyo-Kita Interchange on the Chitahanto Road and Minami-Chita Road, which run through the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, opened on Feb. 28 after being delayed for a year and a half.

The opening was postponed as a result of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system not being able to be installed due to a semiconductor shortage.

The Taketoyo-Kita IC, in Taketoyo in the prefecture, is located about midway between the Handa IC and Taketoyo IC and will improve the accessibility to such areas as Handa, southern Tokoname, southern Kinuura Port and northern Taketoyo. An average of 4,000 vehicles a day are expected to pass through the interchange, likely alleviating congestion near the Handa IC.

Construction began in 2019, and the cost of the project ballooned significantly to ¥13 billion. However, funding was secured through an agreement in which a private entity operates a facility owned by the prefecture. Construction was completed in August 2024, but the installation of ETC equipment was delayed.

“This toll road concession marks its 10th year,” Aichi Gov. Hideaki Omura said at the opening ceremony. “We aim to continue contributing to the revitalization of the Chita Peninsula.”
