World’s oldest king vulture dies at Nagoya zoo

Toki-san, a female king vulture kept at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Chikusa Ward, Nagoya, since 1962, died Friday. Estimated to be over 60 years old, Toki-san was confirmed to be the oldest king vulture in captivity in research done by Germany’s Frankfurt Zoo in 2018.

According to Higashiyama zoo, the effects of old age had left Toki-san unable to fly since last April, and the zoo had been cautiously taking care of her. A zoo official said, “She was one of the oldest residents at the zoo and was loved by many visitors over the years.”
