A total of 41,241 people are still displaced as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. Even in areas where reconstruction projects have been completed, populations have not returned to pre-quake levels.
The number of people killed or missing in the disaster stands at 18,425. The identities of three victims were confirmed in the past year.
The number of disaster-related deaths due to health problems linked to the evacuation has risen to 3,775.
The government has invested ¥35.3 trillion in recovery and reconstruction projects over the past 10 years.
Temporary housing in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures is expected to be vacated at the end of this month.
In Fukushima Prefecture, where the accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant occurred, evacuation orders have not been lifted in seven municipalities, spanning a total of 337 square kilometers.
