Matsushiro Castle was built in the 16th century in what is now Matsushiro, Nagano Pref. It was the castle of the Sanada household from 1622 until 1868. The castle is now a ruin, with the original stone walls remaining.
Gates and bridges were rebuilt with traditional techniques following archeological evidence on their placement. The outer earthen walls were also reconstructed.
Nearby, there are several 19th-century buildings associated with the castle, including old homes which previously belonged to the Sanada and Yokota households.
